You can now read your Kindle books on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just download the free app from iTunes (Kindle for iPhone) and you are ready to go.

You can read books currently on your Kindle as well as all your previously purchased books that are on Amazon’s servers.

You can’t buy books directly from within the application, but it will link you to the Amazon Kindle store.

Apparently, newspapers and magazines are not available within the app.

The current model of the Kindle is still sold out. You can buy used (some are new) Kindles from ‘other sellers’ on Amazon.com, starting around $400. The note from Amazon says the Kindle is expected to ship in 6 - 8 weeks. Of course, this will likely be the Kindle 2.0. Best to continue waiting for now if you haven’t bought one yet.

The Kindle 2 is now expected in the early first quarter of 2009.

The current Kindle is once again sold out and very likely not available new again from Amazon at all. The ship date from Amazon is 11 - 13 weeks. It is fair to speculate that date will match up with the early 1st quarter 2009 date for Kindle 2 and assume the current model will no longer be shipping new. This has caused used Kindle prices to rise once again. Currently, the best deal from the Amazon Marketplace is about $540 and I have observed some Ebay auctions ending right around the $500 price range.

As reported by Tech Crunch on July 17, 2008 the rumored larger Kindle expected in 2009 is likely going to target the college textbook market.

I wasn’t sure about the big screen Kindle when I first mentioned it, but this use makes a lot of sense to me. Textbooks are bulky, heavy, and expensive. Carrying a full semester’s worth of books on one device would be an incredible benefit to any college student. Considering how costly most textbooks are, it doesn’t seem that it would be much of a stretch for students to justify the price of the Kindle (of course we don’t know the price of the larger model yet).
